The binding signing happens in senior year. Recruiting usually gets going in 11th grade.
The one office that decides whether they can practise, compete, or take athletic aid at a D1 or D2 school.
This is the account to make now, and it is free. NCAA's own site: "If you want to play at or make an official visit to a Division I or II school, you need to create a Certification account." The Profile Page keeps them in the system without certifying them - that is the point at 13.

Fee waiver: qualifying categories reported (free/reduced lunch, an SAT/ACT fee waiver, USDA income guidelines, SSI/SNAP, GEAR UP/TRIO/Upward Bound, public housing, foster care, homelessness) are requested inside the Certification account's Payment section and then confirmed by the high school counselor through the High School Portal.
This is where you find out whether their actual courses count. Health and Yearbook do not.

Verbatim: "Division III schools set their own admissions and academic standards." There is no NCAA core-course GPA gate here, and (separately, on the aid page) "Division III schools do not offer athletics scholarships." Neither of those is a problem to apologize for - D3, D2, NAIA, and JUCO are normal outcomes for these families, not consolation prizes.
No sliding scale any more: D1 and D2 use a flat GPA floor, with no test-score chart.
A different set of rules, and a normal outcome, not a consolation. Incoming freshmen meet 2 of 3: ACT 18 or SAT 970 (EBRW+Math, tests on or after May 1 2019; NAIA code 9876); overall unweighted high-school GPA 2.0; top half of the graduating class. That 2.0 is the WHOLE transcript, unweighted - a different number from the NCAA core-course GPA this page calculates above. Do not compare them directly.
NCAA D1 and D2 do NOT require an SAT or ACT score for initial athletic eligibility, for students enrolling full-time on or after August 1, 2023 - confirmed by reading NCAA's own compliance PDFs directly (the D2 2026-27 Summary of NCAA Regulations lists only graduation plus a 2.200 core GPA over 16 core units and names no test score; the D1 2024-25 Summary's academic standards section likewise names none). This is the ATHLETIC eligibility rule only - individual colleges still set their own admissions requirements and some still want a score.

The ACT changed format: the legacy 215-question ACT is retired, and the Enhanced ACT is now the only version. English, Math, and Reading are mandatory and make the Composite score. Science is now OPTIONAL - scored 1-36 separately, feeds a STEM score, and does NOT count toward the Composite. Writing stays optional. 171 questions with Science, 131 without. The 1-36 scale is unchanged.

The 2026-27 FAFSA has been open to everyone since September 24, 2025, and it covers attendance from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027.

The federal FAFSA deadline is June 30 after the academic year ends, so the 2026-27 form closes June 30, 2027.

The 2026-27 Texas priority deadline was January 15, 2026. The 2027-28 date is not published yet. This is a priority date, not a hard cutoff - late applicants are considered as funds allow.
Need-based state grants - TEXAS Grant recipients can get up to $6,000 across fall and spring, with a high-school-program and 9+ credit hour requirement.

CSS timing: there is no single CSS Profile deadline. Early Decision and Early Action schools often want it by November 1 or 15 - earlier than most families think about financial aid at all. Check each school's own deadlines.
Every college that takes federal aid must publish a net price calculator. This is the federal way to find any specific school's, without guessing a URL.
Here is what the words mean. Type each school's date in its row above once you have it.
Verbatim definitions. ED: "A 'binding' application process by which you commit to enrolling in a certain college if you're admitted. You can apply to other colleges, but only apply ED to 1 college. If admitted, you must withdraw your other applications." EA: "An application process to apply and receive a decision earlier than the regular decision notification date. Unlike early decision (ED), EA is 'non-binding' and you have no obligation to enroll and will have until May 1 to consider the offer." Restrictive/Single-Choice EA: "Similar to early action... colleges place certain restrictions on your applications to other early application processes." Rolling: "A decision plan that lets students submit an application at any time throughout the year. Colleges will review applications as they receive them, and make admission decisions throughout the year." ED II is NOT a Common App-defined term - it is absent from this dictionary - and is an institution-specific second binding round. "Priority" is not standardised either; one real example describes a December 1 priority scholarship deadline as maximising merit-scholarship consideration and earlier notification "without the binding commitment of early decision," with the student still having until May 1.
Typical 2026-27 windows observed (not a rule - every school sets its own): ED, REA, and SCEA cluster November 1-15, 2026. ED II clusters January 2-15, 2027. Regular Decision clusters January 1-15, 2027. Priority deadlines are commonly late November to early December. Rolling has no fixed date.
Because somebody will tell you a coach can make you apply early. Verbatim, from the conference's own rule: "a coach may not require a candidate to refrain from visiting or applying to other schools, or to withdraw applications to other schools, as a condition for support during the admissions process."
Common App publishes a member-school requirements grid with ED/EA deadlines by school - Common App members only (MIT, Georgetown and the University of California system are not members).
Verbatim: "most student-athletes receive partial aid, not a full ride... The amount you receive depends on your sport, your division, and your school."
D3 does not offer athletic scholarships at all - verbatim from ncaa.org's D3 page: "Division III schools do not offer athletics scholarships." Merit and need-based aid still apply. That is not a lesser path - see the note on the D3 eligibility link above.
Verbatim: aid "is limited to the actual cost of tuition, mandatory fees, books and supplies required for courses in which the student-athlete is enrolled, and room and board."
Effective July 1, 2025, verbatim: "NCAA rules for Division I programs will no longer include sport-specific scholarship limits." Opted-in schools operate under per-sport roster limits instead.

NAIA: a sport's overall aid cap can also make room for academically-gifted students who meet the NAIA's own GPA/test criteria - the same stacking idea, different rulebook.
D3 (see "not a lesser path," above): with no athletic scholarship in the mix at all, academic and need-based aid is not a supplement to soccer money there, it is the whole budget. Elsewhere, a partial athletic award is a slice of a capped budget split across a whole roster - this site shows each school's cap and roster size on its own card - while an academic award is sized like any other student's, not divided among teammates.
National Letter of Intent: reported eliminated for D1 - the Council approved the change on October 9, 2024, and recruits now sign the school's own athletics aid agreement instead.
